Chronology of cameras Thornton Pickard
The Horizontal Reflex was a simple and cheaper camera made by Thornton-Pickard for those that could not afford a normal reflex camera. It appeared in Thornton Pickard catalogues in 1913. This camera should not be confounded with the more sophisticated Ruby Horizontal Reflex that appeared later. The name ‘Horizontal’ also means that the back is non-rotating and is designed for landscape orientation.
The body is made of mahogany covered with Morocco leather, and it could be made for 3 1/4 x 4 ¼ inches, 9 x 12 cm, 9 x 14 cm and 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches. This specimen is for the smaller plate size.
This camera was made with two different front configurations: a version to adapt simple cameras on the front (such as the Imperial Pocket camera) named Reflex Attachment, and this version that was designed to fit a lens box.
The main difference to other Thornton Pickard reflex cameras is that it has no bellows, and thus, the lens must be mounted in a detachable box and has a helical focusing mount. The lens is a Berthiot Olor, and the assembly can be entirely original, as on the TP 1913 catalogue, besides British and a few German lenses, Berthiot models are also listed. The serial indicates production around 1913-14. The focal plane shutter is the regular TP Ruby, delivering speeds in the range of 1/10 to 1/1000 plus T.
